Vehicle Safety Inspection Certification

Lancaster County Career & Technology Center, in cooperation with the PA Department of Transportation, provides the necessary information and testing for Auto Mechanics to
become licensed as PA State Inspection Mechanics. A Commonwealth of PA State Inspection certification card (MV 439) will be issued by the PA Department of Transportation upon successful completion of this course. Four different certification categories are available.

VEHICLE SAFETY INSPECTION CERTIFICATION CATEGORY 1 AND/OR 2 COURSE

  • Category 1—Includes all passenger cars, trucks up to 17,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and trailers up to 10,000 pounds GVW.
  • Category 2—Includes all motorcycles
  • Located at our Willow Street Campus

CATEGORY 3 COURSE

(Please keep in mind that before taking this course, you must have an active Category 1 or 2 license. If this is your first time getting a Category 3 Inspection License or your previous Inspection Licenses have expired, you must first attend the first three days of the Category 1 /2 class and pass the baseline section part of the Category 1 / 2 test before you can take the Category 3 Course)
  • Includes heavy trucks over 17,000 pounds GVW, trailers over 10,000 pounds GVW, and all buses.
  • This course provides instruction on the use of inspection tools and equipment specific to Category 3 licensing.
  • Located at our Willow Street Campus
