Automation Service Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY
The Automation Service Engineer installs, commissions, troubleshoots, and services automation systems at customer facilities – the firefighter when a line goes down. In-house, the role supports PLC and robot programming, mechanical and electrical assembly and testing, and design and documentation.
Successful candidates are as comfortable turning wrenches as writing code, work independently in the field, and communicate directly with customers, vendors, and engineers. Travel can be up to 50%, often on short notice; otherwise the role is on-site in Lititz, PA.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE (FIRST 12 MONTHS)
• Support 10+ installations or field service calls, handling 3-4 independently start-to-finish.
• Make independent logic changes on 5+ customer PLC programs without engineering rework.
• Build working knowledge of PCI's core technologies and complete 24+ hours of training in a growth area.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Planned Field Work – 25%
• Install and commission automation systems at customer sites, deliver training, and coordinate customers, vendors, and engineers through production handoff.
Unplanned Field Service – 20%
• Respond to emergency service calls when a customer's line goes down, troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, PLC, robot, and vision issues in the field.
Software & Robot Programming – 25%
• Program PLCs (Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi), HMIs, robots (UR, FANUC, Doosan), and vision (Cognex, Keyence).
• Make independent logic changes and program updates on customer systems.
System Assembly & Testing – 15%
• Mechanical assembly, panel wiring, I/O checkout, and safety verification with the build team.
Design & Documentation – 15%
• Electrical and mechanical design support, 3D printing, prototype fabrication, and documentation (Git).
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience & Education
• Bachelor's in automation or related field, OR 2-year technical degree + 2 years experience, OR high school diploma + 4 years relevant experience.Valid driver's license; comfortable traveling on short notice.
• Strong communicator – defuses frustrated customers, coordinates with vendors and engineers.
Technical Skills
• PLC ladder logic (Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi) and basic HMI editing, or strong desire to learn.
• Mechanical aptitude – hands-on assembly, fixturing, 3D printing, and fabrication.
• Electrical troubleshooting, panel wiring, VFD/drive setup, and comfort reading schematics.
• Robot programming exposure (UR, FANUC, Doosan) and vision basics (Cognex/Keyence).
• Industrial networking (EtherNet/IP, Modbus) and safety circuit fundamentals, or willingness to learn.
• Scripting (Python), Git, and CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD Electrical), or a desire to learn.
