Public Works Operator

Full-time Position, Available on: 2022-04-19

Wage: Commensurate with Experience

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a skilled operator position with the Kennett Township’s Public Works Department. The employee performs a variety of tasks related to the operation, maintenance and repair of the Township’s infrastructure, buildings, properties, vehicles, and equipment as well as other assigned duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operate trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment under various weather conditions.
• Removal of snow and other storm debris
• Mowing and brush clearing; ground maintenance on Township properties
• Complete minor equipment repairs
• Change tires and conduct other routine vehicle maintenance activities
• Pave & patch roads; shoulder repairs and other road maintenance
• Maintain/repair/install sewer pipes and other sewer equipment, stormwater pipes, culverts, signs, and Sewer and Township facilities
• Ensure a safe environment on public roadways and properties by assisting with maintenance, repairs, traffic control, and directional signage
• Exercise sound judgment and common sense in evaluating situations and in making decisions
• Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

• Working knowledge of principles, practices, processes, materials, tool, and equipment used in public works operations and facility maintenance.
• Ability to operate and maintain various equipment used in maintenance and repair such as, but not limited to, backhoe, dump trucks, mower, sewer equipment and power tools.
• Working knowledge of construction techniques involving streets and roads, drainage systems, flood control and sanitary sewers.
• Familiarity with occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures related to the municipal maintenance and repair activities.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• One year experience in public works operations (or related field).
• Or equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
• Must have a Commercial Driver’s License B or A and experience operating large trucks.
• Experience with MS4/stormwater, sewer repairs/maintenance and pump stations a plus.
• Must have a strong customer service / public service orientation and be able to communicate in an appropriate manner with the public.
• Positive attitude and strong team player, willingness to go beyond core responsibilities to help wherever required.
• Self-starter with a sense of personal accountability and ability to work independently with minimal supervision, multi-task and manage time effectively.
• Ability to meet on-call and overtime requirements of the job, including occasionally servicing emergencies off hours, overnight, on weekends and holidays. The Public Works team has a rotating on-call schedule for a week at a time, which includes a minimum of four hours of overtime pay. Public Works is also always on-call for storms or other major events.
• Candidates with Firefighter Training are preferred: Pro-Board Firefighter 1 or equivalent, Dept of Health Vehicle Rescue or equivalent, CPR/AED/First Aid minimum, Firefighter Survival, Emergency Vehicle Operations, ProBoard Pumper/Driver Operator

Physical Demands/Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must be able to see, hear, walk, stand, squat, shovel, rake, move 100 pounds from one location to another, climb stairs and ladders, climb in and out of ditches, manholes, inlets, etc. The employee works outside daily and is exposed to dirt, dust, noise, grease, oil, diesel fuel, gasoline sewage, fumes, water, cold, heat, snow, and rain. In addition, the employee must be able to drive all the Township trucks and operate the large equipment and power tools.
