Full-time, Temporary Position, Available on: 2023-03-09
Who we are
Nature’s Classroom New England is the largest outdoor education program in the northeast. We specialize in hands-on education with an emphasis on nature, outdoor living skills, science, and social-emotional learning. We provide meaningful programming for thousands of elementary and middle school students across New England and eastern New York each year! Each spring and fall we host students at our 6 beautiful sites. During their 1-5 day stay, students participate in an exciting variety of day and nighttime activities.
Responsibilities
As a nurse at Nature’s Classroom New England, you would be responsible for providing care to elementary and middle school students who will be staying on our property for multi-day programs. Our nurses live on site and are on-call 24/7 when students are on property (M-F). Nurses are responsible for helping students stay healthy during their trip. This includes, but is not limited to:
Provide healthcare to meet the individual needs of students.
Provide treatment and follow-up based on each medical situation and refer students to a local doctor, hospital, or ambulance services if necessary.
Follow health care policies/procedures as described in the Healthcare Manual and within the guidelines of the Standing Orders provided by a local doctor.
Create a MAR for each school and distribute medications as prescribed. Scheduled med passes are 4 times daily (before each meal and before bed) and between those times when necessary.
Coordinate with Nature’s Classroom teaching staff, several times each day, to ensure that emergency medications (i.e. EpiPens and rescue inhalers) are with the proper staff for each activity.
Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to state and American Camp Association Standards.
Contact school nurses or students’ families to address any questions about medications, medical history, or allergies.
Inventory supplies and coordinate with the Healthcare Administer to order necessary medical materials and equipment as needed.
Dates of employment
Being a part of our health care team is a seasonal position. Our spring season generally runs from the beginning of March to early June and our fall season from late August to mid-November. Each site will have its own start and end dates that fall within those ranges.
The season starts about a week before students arrive. That time is dedicated to training and setting up the health center, which includes coordinating with the Healthcare Administrator to order any needed supplies.
