Breaking News/ Traffic Anchor

WGAL News 8, the Hearst-owned NBC affiliate serving the Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York, PA market, has a full-time opening for a Breaking News/Traffic Anchor for our morning show.

The ideal candidate has an excellent, energetic on-air presence and strong reporting skills. Traffic and Breaking News are two key pillars in our morning strategy, and this person will be a champion for both of those elements. This person would be a core member of the WGAL News 8 Today team. The ideal candidate can monitor and identify commute-related issues, while searching for breaking news throughout the morning. This person should be comfortable covering rapidly developing stories both in studio and live in the field. The ideal candidate has a masterful grasp on multiplatform journalism, maintaining a strong digital and social presence all while bringing that same real-time information to our TV audience. We are looking for an excellent storyteller who will also engage with our viewers.

Job Responsibilities:

Work independently to identify breaking stories each morning to report live on air
Monitor traffic conditions and use our traffic systems to build graphics for both regular and breaking traffic reports
Ability to report live in the field or studio, especially during breaking news and weather coverage
Cultivate source connections with first responders to garner information on local incidents
Actively monitor social media, HTV sister stations, NBC/CNN affiliates for breaking news stories and updates
Identify long-term or enterprise stories to work on after the morning show
Fill-in anchor as needed
In-person attendance is required

Experience Requirements:

Looking for 2-3 years as a television news reporter. Anchor experience is a plus
Equivalent military experience will be considered

Qualifications Requirements:

Knowledge and experience of the station’s traffic system
Must be a self-starter and able to ad-lib in breaking news situations
Must speak clearly, have basic knowledge of how to use a computer, and basic knowledge of social media outlets
Must have strong reporting skills to include breaking news


Related experience and/or training considered as well as a combination of education and experience
